The Tennessee Tech men’s tennis team secured the Horizon League South Division title with a 6-1 win over Southern Indiana on April 10 at the Tech Tennis Courts.
This win marks the sixth consecutive victory for the Golden Eagles, who now hold a 13-7 overall record and remain undefeated in conference play at 5-0. The team’s recent performance includes winning nine of their last ten matches.
Head coach Mark Klysner said, “What a day for these guys. I couldn’t be prouder of a group of guys and what a deserving group it is. Clinching the regular season title means a lot, but we’ve got one more to go and are certainly not done yet. We have bigger goals, but this feels really good. I’m just so happy for the team and look forward to seeing how far we can go.”
In doubles play, Christian Capuccini and Oliver Dao clinched the deciding match in No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 win, while Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks added another point in No. 1 doubles by defeating their opponents 6-2. Southern Indiana’s Aaron Dawson and Adam Koon took No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-1.
All five singles victories for Tennessee Tech were won in straight sets: Dao (No.1) defeated Axel Sabourin; Alvarez (No.2) beat Aaron Dawson; Diego Munoz (No.4), Murilo Burckhardt (No.5), and Ricard Garavi Yepez (No.6) also recorded wins against their respective opponents.
Southern Indiana earned its only point when Davids Spaks retired during his match against Mathys Bove at No.3 singles after splitting six games each in the first set.
Friday’s match also served as Senior Day for Tennessee Tech, which honored Elyad Oshnavie before play began.
Looking ahead, Tennessee Tech will try to complete an undefeated conference season when they travel to Nashville to face Belmont on Saturday, April 18.
