The Tennessee Tech men’s tennis team secured a perfect conference record on Apr. 18 by defeating Belmont 4-2 in Nashville. The Golden Eagles finished the Horizon League regular season at 6-0 and extended their winning streak to seven matches.
This achievement marks a turnaround for the team, which finished last in the conference just one year ago. Their strong finish gives them momentum as they head into the Horizon League Championships with a 10-1 record over their last eleven matches.
Belmont managed to take the doubles point, but Tennessee Tech responded by winning four singles matches. Five of six singles contests went to three sets, including Murilo Buckhardt’s victory that clinched the match for Tennessee Tech. Davids Spaks and Diego Munoz also earned three-set wins, while Alex Alvarez won his match in straight sets.
Head coach Mark Klysner said, “This as one of the great college tennis matches I’ve been a part of as a coach. We came out a little sluggish in doubles, which is usually our strong suit, but credit to Belmont as they played extremely well. What a performance by the guys in singles, coming out with such tenacity and mental toughness. To finish last place a season ago to going undefeated this year has been a special accomplishment, but we’ve got higher goals. We will enjoy an undefeated regular season, but have our sights set on next week.”
Following this result—the program’s first undefeated conference campaign since 2021—Tennessee Tech enters the Horizon League Championships as South No. 1 seed and receives a bye directly into Saturday’s semifinals at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati.
