Tennessee Tech University’s Backdoor Playhouse will stage Neil Simon’s farce “Rumors” beginning April 16, with performances running through April 25 at the theater located in the rear of the Jere Whitson Memorial Building on the university’s main quad.
The production, directed by Eleni Fragopoulos, brings together a cast of characters entangled in secrets and misunderstandings during an anniversary party that takes an unexpected turn. The play is set in an elegant townhouse just outside New York City where guests arrive to find their host injured and his wife missing.
“After reading the play, it quickly became clear that this was a wonderful choice, full of lively physical humor and richly drawn characters,” Fragopoulos said.
Throughout the evening, three couples attempt to navigate confusion and maintain appearances as they invent explanations for what has happened. Their efforts result in mistaken identities and escalating deception as they try to protect their host’s reputation while keeping their stories consistent.
Written by Neil Simon, “Rumors” is recognized for its sharp wit and blend of rapid-fire dialogue with physical comedy. The upcoming production aims to highlight how social facades can unravel under pressure.
Performances are scheduled for April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on April 18 at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $15; senior citizens (65+), military personnel with identification pay $12; students pay $5; faculty and staff can attend for $5 on April 23. Tickets may be purchased online through a new ticketing system that allows patrons to select seats digitally.
