Census Bureau: 4.5% of people in Smith County identified as multiracial in 2021

Of the 19,820 citizens living in Smith County in 2021, 95.5% said they were only one race, while 4.5% said they were two or more races, according to U.S. Census Bureau data obtained in June.

The most prevalent racial group among citizens in Smith County who reported being of a single race in 2021 was white, comprising 91.4% or 18,120 individuals. Following them, African American accounted for 2.3% and totaled 459 individuals.

The percentage of multiracial residents in Smith County is 0.7% higher than the state average, which stands at 3.8%.
