The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (1-7, 0-3 Great Midwest) traveled to Malone University (7-2, 4-1 Great Midwest) on Saturday afternoon and fell 57-45.
THE SERIES
The Pioneers improved to 9-2 against the Trojans. They also claimed the season series last year.
THE FLOW
Jose Waring scored the first four points of the game. However, Malone responded by scoring the following 10 points. The Trojans countered with nine straight points of their own in which Jaden Smallwood scored four points, and Jake Mulder capped the run off with a three as the Trojans took a 13-10 lead. Later in the half, the Trojans made a trio of three-pointers to extend their lead to 24-18 with 7:53 left in the first half. Malone chipped away at the lead, but Trevecca went into halftime up 32-28.
Malone came out in the second half on fire, as they scored 16 straight points to build a 44-32 lead with 12:17 left. Lawrence Brazil III made a three-pointer, and Jose Waring and Caleb Terry scored to cut the deficit to 51-45 with 2:50 remaining, but that was as close as they would get.
THE PLAYERS
Jose Waring led the Trojans with 10 points and eight rebounds. Jaden Smallwood and Josh Goings both had eight points.
THE TEAMS
The Trojans shot 35.8% (19-53) from the floor, 21.4% (6-28) from three-point range, and 25% (1-4) from the free-throw line.
