The LeMoyne-Owen College Men's cross country team competed in the City Auto Twilight Memphis XC meet last night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Germantown, Tennessee.
The meet was the coaching debut of Olympic gold medalist Dr. Rochelle Stevens. Stevens was named head coach last September.
Thousands of fans and participants packed the complex, about thirty minutes before the women's team was set to compete, the meet was delayed due to the weather.
At about 10:15pm the Magicians started the race. Rain was a constant factor throughout the meet. Freshman Xavier Haley finished 73rd (24.46.88) and was the first LeMoyne runner to cross the finish line. Shortly after, freshman Mateen Smith would dash across the finish-line at 26.11 seconds (83rd). Charles Maxwell would be the third and final Magician to cross the finish line (96th). Moments after Maxwell finished, the rain would turn to lightning and the remainder of the match would be canceled.
"It was unfortunate that we weren't able to finish, we were super close", said Junior Gjerard Wilson. Wilson and Sophomore Tariq Shepherd were approaching the last leg of the race before the race was canceled.
The next meet for the Magicians will be September 10th at Central Arkansas. The meet will begin at 9:00am.
