Congressman John Rose, who represents Tennessee’s 6th district in the U.S. House of Representatives, used his social media platform in October 2025 to comment on the ongoing federal government shutdown and negotiations between congressional Republicans and Democrats.
On October 17, 2025, Congressman Rose criticized statements attributed to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and a Democratic aide regarding the shutdown. In his post, Rose stated: “.@SenSchumer actually said that every day the government is shut down is a win for Democrats. Meanwhile, a Democratic aide bragged that their party won’t back down unless planes start falling out of the sky. It’s a despicable thing to say, and even more vile that the radical https://t.co/wmznfAdM2b”.
Three days later, on October 20, Rose addressed proposed compromise legislation involving Senate leadership. He wrote: “Compromise with @SenSchumer on a $1.5 trillion Dirty Deal that piles on debt and gives taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants? Absolutely not. The @HouseGOP did our job. It’s time Democrats do theirs.”
In another post later that same day, Rose emphasized his view of responsibility for the ongoing closure: “Fixed it for you. Days Democrats have kept the government CLOSED are circled in red. The @HouseGOP is ready to work when Democrats come to their senses and reopen the government.”
These posts reflect ongoing tensions in Congress over federal spending bills and immigration policy. Disagreements over funding priorities—including border security provisions—have contributed to multiple recent government shutdowns or threats thereof in past years as well.
Government shutdowns can result from failure by Congress and the President to enact appropriations legislation funding federal agencies. During such events, many nonessential services are suspended until an agreement is reached.
